Stinking Rich - Reframe

All,

I heard this phrase over the weekend. Stinking Rich . That got me thinking where does it come from? Have again forgot the meaning.

A quick look at www.etymonline.com suggests we may have.

Originally O.E. stincan "emit a smell of any kind" (class III strong verb; past tense stonc), from W.Gmc. *stenkwanan (cf. O.S. stincan, O.H.G. stinkan, Du. stinken), from the root of stench. O.E. swote stincan "to smell sweet," . So smelling of much was (and still is!) a good thing.

Although I found an excellent idea or theory on a webpage of the word detective:

I'd like to know the meaning behind the phrase "stinking rich." I was told several years ago (while touring a church in Belgium) that it came from the fact that poor people were buried outside the church. The rich were interred inside, in crypts, and when someone in their family died and was to be buried, the stone was rolled away and there was an awful smell -- hence the term "stinking rich." True or false?

Money Doesn't Grow On Trees - Reframe

This I can't take credit for I heard this excellent reframe from James Ray. I thought I'd share it with you because it blew me away and still does when I think about it.

Take out the largest monetary note from your wallet or pocket. Note because the value is higher than a coin. Look at it.

What is it predominately made of?

Answer - Paper

Where does paper come from?

Answer - Bark

Where does bark come from?

Answer - Trees

Therefore money really does grow on trees!

The reaction when I tell this to people is really interesting...try it and see.

All Rich People Are Greedy - Reframe

Further to my last post, here . I beginning to think many of our common phrases, beliefs and attitudes are actually misunderstandings, deletions (something is missing i.e. information) and generalisations. So many of us, myself included at times, don't question or want to alter these generalisations, attitudes or beliefs because we don't want to rock the boat or appear different from those around us. Which is great and fantastic if you want to be ordinary. What if like me you want to be extra-ordinary? Is it not those around that often keep us where we are?

I was thinking what is another term, phrase or belief I often hear or I suppose even think in the area of money, wealth and abundance. Those without money tend to make sweeping generalisations about those that do, which then often hold those lacking back from what we actually want, because for us, even though we may want something, it has a negative energy, emotion or hold over us.

According to the On line Etymology Dictionary Greedy means

O.E. grædig "voracious," also "covetous," from P.Gmc. *grædagaz (cf. O.S. gradag, O.N. graðr "greed, hunger"), from base *græduz (cf. Goth. gredus "hunger," O.E. grædum "eagerly"), cognate with Skt. grdh "to be greedy." In Gk., the word was philargyros, lit. "money-loving." Greed is 1609 back-formation. A Ger. word for it is habsüchtig, from haben "to have" + sucht "sickness, disease," with sense tending toward "passion for."

Therefore are we to hate rich people because they are money-loving (how does the phrase money-loving make you feel? ) They have a hunger for money? Or do we not like it because they have a passion for money?

If you have a passion for something or someone, do you not want to do that thing or be with that passion as much as possible? We like to do the things or be around the people we have a passion for. By virtue of having a passion for something or someone, you also attract more of that. Why? because that is what you are thinking of and putting your energy into for much of the time.

Simply put, yet so powerfully and elegantly. You get what you focus on!

Therefore the larger question is how do I/you develop a passion for money? Or anything for that matter. If you have a passion for one thing in your life, then surely you know you can 'do' passion. By this I mean, what if we apply the same, structure, thought patterns, words and actions etc to another area, will we then by copying or modelling develop a 'passion' for something else.

When it comes down to it, rich people aren't greedy, all rich people are passionate about money. If you're aren't passionate about money, do you think that maybe why you don't have as much as you want?

Filthy Rich - Reframe

I've noticed recently I've alot of negative self talk going on inside my head. This I'm correcting when I catch myself.

I've just heard a story where somebody described another person as filthy rich. For some reason this I caught and heard. It got me thinking. I don't want to hold this belief or attitude. How else can I hold it or thinking about it. Time to reframe it.

Reframing is taking a word and its meaning or context and changing either or both.

Initially I thought filthy rich...????

Then I thought actually all rich, filthy or otherwise are very clean. Those that I know drive nice clean cars, have nice clean clothes. Nothing filthy about it! So that was a good start.

Then I did what I often do..go look for the origin of a word. Words fascinate me. Meanings often get lost. Words, statements and beliefs all become 'old wives tales'. So much of which is true yet lost at the same time.

A quick look at the etymology of the word filth revealed. The following, there are many definitions.

One of which was as follows:

lucre

c.1380, from L. lucrum "gain, profit," from PIE base *lu-/*leu- (cf. Gk. apo-lanein "to enjoy," Goth. launs, Ger. lohn "wages, reward," and possibly Skt. lotam, lotram "booty"). Filthy lucre (Tit. i:11) is Tyndale's rendering of Gk. aischron kerdos.

From this I therefore took the following to be filthy rich is actually to to gain or to profit. Today when we profit or gain, it is often in the form of money, thus it is a wage or reward for work we have done, which surely is to be enjoyed!

So, being filthy rich is just enjoying the fruits of what you have done. Thus the question is do you hate or dislike rich people?

Is it because you actually aren't getting the rewards and thus the enjoyment from what you are doing.

So, here is to being filthy rich because it is my gain and reward for the work I've done. Now I'm off to enjoy myself.
